Butaleja's First High Court Criminal Session Kicks Off
Court Session at Butaleja Chief Magistrate Court

Several court users, justice actors, members of the public on Monday turned up at Butaleja Chief Magistrates Court to witness the District's first High Court Criminal Session.

The month-long session, which is being presided over by Justice Lawrence Tweyanze, started with a meeting to introduce key stakeholders in the session and outline their respective roles. The meeting was also for the accused persons to interact with their legal representatives.

The Judge explained that 40 cases would be handled and went on to explain the different roles played by different officials during the session. These included the roles of the Advocates, both the defence and the State Attorney, and the court assessors.

The area Member of Parliament, Yusuf Mutembuli thanked the Judiciary for the session. He also thanked Justice Tweyanze for accepting to be in Butaleja, noting that this had taken justice closer to the people.

After the brief, plea taking and scheduling of hearing dates was done.

Participating in the session; Tororo Assistant Registrar, HW Hellen Edimu, HW Gerald Padoko, the Resident Magistrate Grade I, representatives of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Uganda Police Force, Uganda Prisons Service, the LC V Chairperson as well as complainants’/victims’ families and members of the public.
